Specialist Lymphoedema and Scar Therapy

What is Specialist Lymphoedema Treatment?

Lymphoedema is a long-term condition that causes swelling, usually in the arms or legs, because of a build-up of lymph fluid. This can happen due to various reasons like genetics, surgery, radiation therapy, infections, or injuries. Specialist lymphoedema treatment focuses on managing the swelling, reducing symptoms, improving your quality of life, and preventing further problems.

Conservative Management of Lymphoedema

Conservative management is the main approach to treating lymphoedema without surgery. It includes various non-invasive techniques designed to reduce swelling and keep your limbs healthy. A key component of this approach is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT): CDT is a multi-step treatment plan that includes:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle, specialized form of massage that helps move lymph fluid out of the swollen areas.

  • Compression Therapy: Using bandages or compression garments to reduce swelling and prevent fluid from accumulating.

  • Skin Care: Proper skin care routines to prevent infections and keep the skin healthy.

  • Exercise: Tailored exercises that encourage lymphatic fluid movement and improve limb function.

  • Education: Teaching you how to manage your condition effectively at home.
